In high-pressure compressed air applications, the presence of lubricating oil carryover is a major challenge that compromises downstream processes, pneumatics, and end-product quality. The air-oil separator acts as the critical barrier in rotary screw and vane air compressors, utilizing multi-stage coalescing filtration systems to separate suspended oil particles from the compressed air stream and return the lubricant to the compressor's cooling loop.

Within a rotary screw compressor, oil is injected into the compression chamber to lubricate bearings, seal clearances, and dissipate heat. The discharged air-oil mixture is a dense aerosol consisting of vaporized oil, microscopic droplets (0.01 µm to 1 µm), and larger droplets. The primary separation process starts mechanically inside the receiver tank via centrifugal forces and changes in velocity. However, the final purification relies on the air-oil separator element.
Filtration inside the element happens via three key physical mechanisms: physical interception, inertial impaction, and Brownian diffusion. Large droplets are captured through direct interception when they collide with glass fibers. Medium-sized droplets are filtered by inertial impaction due to rapid direction changes in the fluid stream. The finest aerosol particles, governed by Brownian motion, migrate towards the fibers and coalesce over time. Choosing the right density of borosilicate glass media is essential to handle varying flow velocities and temperatures.
