Compressed air systems are the energetic backbone of modern heavy industries, ranging from automotive manufacturing to high-purity chemical processing. However, a major engineering challenge in utilizing lubricated rotary screw or centrifugal compressors is the presence of lubricating oil aerosols within the output stream. This is where Air Separator Compressors play an essential role. The primary function of an oil separator is to separate oil droplets from compressed air, ensuring clean delivery while simultaneously returning oil back to the compressor's lubrication loop.

The physical mechanism governing this process relies on multi-stage coalescence. When the high-velocity, oil-laden compressed air enters the separator chamber, mechanical pre-separation occurs through tangential cyclonic movement, dropping larger oil droplets to the bottom of the vessel. The remaining sub-micron aerosols (ranging from 0.01 to 1 micron) then enter the separation element.

Within the separation media—typically comprised of borosilicate micro-glass fibers—three distinct processes operate in tandem: Direct Interception (where larger particles touch and adhere to the fibers), Inertial Impaction (where dense oil droplets fail to negotiate the tortuous path of the airflow and collide with fibers), and Brownian Diffusion (where extremely minute nanoparticles move randomly due to thermal collision, eventually contacting and bonding with the fiber matrix). As these micro-droplets accumulate on the fiber intersections, they coalesce into larger, heavier droplets that drain down the outer layer via gravity to the scavenge line.
